Interiority Complex is concerned with privileging what the reductive rhetoric of high modernism deemed as ‘other’. It re-examines the concerns raised by feminist artists during the 1970s, particularly the inferior status attributed to what has traditionally been regarded as women’s work and to the feminised realm of the decorative arts. Specific emphasis has been placed on the relationship that women, nature, decoration, the domestic, consumerism, femininity and the unconscious have to the fine arts. These elements share an association to the irrational and, as a result, were subject to containment or banishment from masculinised space.
